Junk Mail Show

SO LITTLE TIME…..

-THE JUNK MAIL! SHOW-

JULY 9TH – 30TH 2010
@ THE SOAP GALLERY
3180 MISSION ST. 94110

On Friday night, July 9, from 6-9pm at The Soap Gallery, 3180 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA, please join over 30 Bay Area Artists and one Mid-Western Artist in celebrating the opening of “…so many products so little time…The JUNK MAIL! Show.”  Sculpture, drawing, printmaking, video, artist’s books, poetry, prose, collage and painting are all part of this hilarious send-up of the consumer world meets Pop Art = junk mail culture.  A collection of awesomely ultra-mundane meditations on the advertising campaigns and products that are pushed on us when we’re least expecting it.  Co-organizers and artists Andy Vogt and Sarah Smith literally forced the 30+ participants in this show to confront, read and be inspired by rather than recycle the junk that the postal worker delivers to us on a daily basis.   From the wreckage of this domestic “carpet bombing,” the artists in The JUNK MAIL! Show use ideas and imagery culled from the endless supply of direct mail circulars to create homages to the detritus of the mail slot.

Borders

– BORDERS –
July 7 – 27, 2010
@ Root Division
3175 17th St (at S. Van Ness), 94110

Root Division is thrilled to exhibit work by 23 artists from 9 states, representing 9 ethnicities, exploring how we define and interact with the borders that surround us. Borders, an exhibition about lines and how we cross them, includes a range of art forms such as interactive sculpture, video, photography, installation, performance, and new media.

Borders form an edge that can define geographical, political, religious, biological, or aesthetic entities. They are places between things, places where one thing becomes another, places where identities shift and where an end becomes a beginning. Borders can be indistinct, such as those separating gender, or glaringly obvious, like those between warring countries. A border can be a place of control and limits, or it can present an opportunity for new unions. The simplest boundary might be a line drawn in the sand, the most complex: one that governs social behavior.

The artists in this show touch on a variety of these themes and encourage the viewer to re-evaluate the political, geographical, and moral divisions that define our current condition.
